Issue Three - Out Now!

This month I witnessed the graduation of my youngest child, Miss J., from high school. All of those years of education finalised with the presentation of a certificate and a round of applause. Her Year 12 formal cemented the fact that my daughter was now entering the next phase of her life. As I watched Miss J slip into her svelte red prom dress and apply the same shade of red lipstick to her lips, my heart hammered in my chest. A wave of panic rushed through my mind and body.

I can’t explain it any better than that but at that moment I knew that this precious girl was speeding towards the world of ‘adulting’. With this revelation, I began to question every minute detail of my parenting so far; had I taught confidence, resilience, self-worth and humility? Was my daughter sufficiently equipped to cope with all of life’s challenges and pleasures alike?

After a few sips of wine and some deep breathing I decided that yes, my daughter is a wonderfully capable (yet sometimes overly optimistic!) young woman who will flourish and become any type of adult that she wishes to be. I have confidence that, as her mother, I have been responsible for a small ripple of change.

One of our valued contributor’s mentions this ‘ripple’. It begins with just one person creating a small positive change, which is well-received, and then forwarded onto others. Pretty soon the tiny ripple becomes a sweeping wave of positive change that affects an entire community.

I have no doubt that my very own Miss J will initiate her own ripple and, with the support of a wonderful network of women, will enjoy her adulthood as a successful, empowered woman reaping the benefits of each consecutive sweeping wave.
